The church bombing was Sept 15, 1963
Richard Farina wrote “Birmingham Sunday”, though never on his albums.
Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam” was written in part because of the bombing.
I never heard any John Coltrane (at least knowingly) until I got a CD player in 1997, and his “Live at the Villlage Vanguard” was one of the first CDs I bought. I never had to adjust to it, I guess decades of listening to people influenced by him set things up. There is lots to listen to. Even popular songs written by others “My Favourite Things” and “Chim chim cher-ee” become distinctive under his saxophone.
I did the same thing. I bought a CD player in 1990, decided not to duplicate any of my LPs. I figured, I didn’t really have any jazz albums, went our and bought Live at the Village Vanguard and Mingus Ah Um. It was one of those third-eye-opening moments.
Goes and buys "Live at the Village Vanguard"
Perhaps we will not see his like again. I wish I could say we won’t need one.
