You can still buy Alphasmarts on eBay for $50. They’re tanks. I’ve had mine for a decade, and it’s still going strong. Think I’m only on my second set of batteries, too.

Many prisons only permit see-thru electronics, so maybe this can make its way into a prisoners’ hands

Ridiculous. Tell you what: for a mere €250, I’ll turn your laptop into a dedicated typewriter instead.

Ouch! At that price, you might as well get the ReMarkable which does handwriting recognition, can read Office files and read PDFs and buy its keyboard folio cover for when you just want to bash out a lot of text.
