I think the existence of both “Son of the Mask” (2005) and three seasons of “The Mask: Animated Series” (1995-1997) probably qualifies it for “franchise” status. Just not one that succeeded in becoming something a corporate studio can keep on reinterpreting for guaranteed big sales.

That said the idea of “pick whatever random time period you want to set your Mask sequel in” is a pretty good one.
