You’ve got the right idea.
The mechanics of how exactly they evade the various sorts of attacks that might tie a payer to a payee are beyond my ken, and perhaps vary in mechanism and effectiveness from one implementation to another.

Good point but we’ll probably never know. Bitcoin is supposed to foil AML/CTF efforts
$17K is cheaper than hiring more sysadmins or restoring everything from backup (if they exist)
