As you say, “at some standard set of conditions.” If you’re not at those standard set of conditions (temperature and altitude) then “about the weight of 1cc of water” is exactly right.

You need to look at a series called “The Secret Life of Machines”. It’s full of great simple explanations of how things work in a similar way to this.
