That’s my point, and I believe that was the point of Bitter Lake as well. Adam talks at great length about Saudi influence in Afghanistan (both in religious terms and in supporting the Mujahideen), and talks about the USSR’s invasion of Afghanistan to quell US influence - which was originally invited in and welcomed. That is why I am taking issue with the article’s statement about “…the West’s involvement in Afghanistan.” It is clearly much more than that; the East and Middle-East have equally played their part. Saudi and Iran and now the main protagonists in the Middle-East, but you rarely hear about that.
I can’t help feeling the writer of the article missed the point somewhat.
