The only reason you have pilots awake all night is the lack of people to relieve them and the expectation of management that they should work so many hours.

This is a huge problem in medicine, too. No one is at their best at the end of a 12½ hour shift. Yet we expect people who have other people’s lives in their hands to do this regularly.
Overwork has deadly consequences.
At least this was averted. Imagine what wasn’t.
Add in long-haul trucking, etc. What industry hasn’t the invisible hand of the market twisted beyond safe standards?
