Sounds like it’s actually a potentially useful practice then. We do many ritualistic things to help us bring subconscious knowledge and emotion to the surface for reasons of utility. Most magicians worth their salt would acknowledge that manipulating consciousness through ritual is the primary mechanism of “magick.”

I think that the difference with divining rods is that they have been tested. They’ve been tested over and over and have never shown any evidence for efficacy in a controlled environment.
It’s easy enough to fake efficacy outside of a controlled environment and I suspect that the field is well-populated with the sort of charlatans that haunt (yeah, intentional pun) the world mediumship.
