Can you point to any historical atrocity committed by people who thought of themselves the Bad Guys?

Everyone thinks of themselves as the heroes of their own story. Crusaders, colonial powers, slavers, fascists and genocidal war criminals always find some way of rationalizing their actions. None of them need your help.

As a Canadian this drove me nuts as a kid. I’m American! I live in North America!!! But alas I’m not American, I’m Canadian… didn’t like that the USians co-opted the term American at all back then. Now? I’m good with it, I just call myself Canadian, Human, and Earthian!

Neither Europe nor the USA can change the past. It’s all about learning from the mistakes and do better.

If we look at at the current living generation we see an US population idolizing its military and violence as solution to foreign policy issues. This current population voted for governments in the last 30 years that started wars which killed hundred thousands innocent civilians, is directly and indirectly responsible for mass migrations of refugees and routinely violates human rights all over the globe. On top of that it has the gall to call themselves “beacon of freedom/liberty” and the like.

The US population did learn from the past but apparently it’s more on the line of “It worked out fine, let’s continue” than “Never again.”
