Douthat’s core worry is that ladyparts are icky and that other people are enjoying sex – this is just a cover concern he thinks will appeal to the NYT readership. It’s a wonder he was able to do his reproductive duty to the Church without throwing himself from the top of St Patrick’s Cathedral shortly thereafter.
The idea that his purported concern might be addressed by better and more honest media literacy and sex education in middle and high school would be totally unthinkable to an ultramontane Catholic like him who still thinks Ratzinger is the rightful Pope.

Interesting that just this morning I was hearing a story about an idea to enact an idea almost completely opposite to this. Creating realistic porn and letting teenagers watch it. Sort of what a lot of teenagers think when they first hear the words Sex Ed. Or what Monty Python lampooned in the Meaning of Life.
The worry wasn’t that seeing someone naked would ruin a person, but that they would get the notion that the proper way to have sex is to start with a deepthroat where the guy is grabbing the woman by the hair and slamming her face into his crotch, followed by jamming his dick up her butthole and then finishing off by spurting all over her face. And of course the lady is pretending to like everything.
Instead they want to tell kids that porn like that is ridiculous nonsense and actual sexual encounters have communication, kissing, massaging, foreplay, etc…
I doubt it will happen because there is still a contingent of people who are deathly afraid that if you tell teenagers that sex can feel good then they might want to do it. The “If you’re happy and you know it, that’s a sin” crowd.

Douthat wants to erase porn from the Internet? Good luck with that. The only realistic outcome is a lot more people clogging up the court system for a very modest reduction in porn consumption. Or worse, a Japan style situation where limits on porn cause the producers to go absolutely bonkers with crazy off the wall ideas and cause a porn Renaissance. He should be glad that so much of our domestic porn is relatively boring boning.

Of course, that didn’t stop the ban everything brigade when it came to alcohol, gambling, drugs or sex work, so it isn’t going to stop today’s social authoritarians of all stripes from trying again.
And of course, to them, the massive surveillance state and draconian punishments aren’t an unintended side effect. They’re the point. Punishing people for daring to enjoy something that they have decided is bad is what they’re after.

I feel like the core problem with Christians in general and Catholics in particular is that they take reasonable recommendations for living a good life which only make sense if you internalize them voluntarily, and insist on foisting them upon the entire population from the position of authority, completely ruining any possibility of people actually adopting them for their own benefit.

If we ever manage to burden ourselves with a government capable of effectively banning pictures of nekkid people forming the best with two backs (or drugs, or gay sex, or any of the other myriad consensual things busybodies dream of a world without), we will have much bigger problems than where to find smut.
Still, might be worth it if we can get rid of vertical video.

LOL. These religious moralists are trying to deny one of the strongest and recurring drives for humans in existence. All anyone needs to do is read about Jim Bakker sexually assaulting Jessica Hahn, Jimmy Swaggert, Tony Alamo etc. The ones that crow the loudest seem to be the ones with the largest demons riding on their shoulders.
