Humans have a sixth sense for Earth's magnetic field

Periodically one should have his/her spins aligned. The resulting relaxation gives off tell-tale vibes that can form an insightful image.

Sometimes, I walk around with a rock in my shoe all day, just because it feels so good when I take it out

It turns out that Professor X was communicating with the Dead Magneto all the time!

MRIs were my first thought.

Earth’s magnetic field is huge; but pretty feeble(they say 25-65 microteslas depending on location). A sense that responds to that would, one naively imagines, freak the hell out when presented with a 1+ Tesla field; quite possibly in a way that has permanent effects.

Certainly experiencing a sensory input 10,000+ times as powerful as the stimulus the sense evolved for would be pretty noticeable (though possibly only once) for any of your other senses.

It’s interesting that magnetic reception is apparently so subtle and/or resistant to extremes.

So, where is my degauss button?

When I had my appendix removed, I remember being shocked at finding up I was on the tenth floor, and not the first floor when I lost consciousness. Apparently there is some part of the brain that remembers what floor you fell asleep on, and checks it against the floor you wake up on, and sounds an alarm if it sees a difference.

How handy.

Why did that make me laugh?

Are you questioning @Papasan eminent bearing?

Never; I’m absolutely sure he knows which way he’s pointing right now.

That’s your 7th sense at work. Your altimeter sense.

Oh GLOB. Don’t show this to my in-laws, or I will have to shut down WiFi every time they come visit.

Also, don’t show these headlines to antivaxxers, homoeopathy followers, acupuncture evangelists and all other non-reproducible remedy believers.

If even the happy mutants here already start sharing stories on how they felt awkward in Australia after a 12+ hours flight and start speculation about their heads pointing the wrong way in the magnetic field…

Also, did I mention the earth’s magnetic field is weakening and will soonish flip? Imagine the chaos of everyone felt disoriented!

I’m disoriented right now!! Someone call my Reiki specialist…

A number of people claim that they can sense wifi, from routers without any power.

I wouldn’t say that… sight and hearing both work on logarithmic scales after all (for example, the difference between 30dB sounds and 80dB sounds is 10000 times the amount of energy delivered, but you can listen to both 30dB sounds and 80dB sounds quite comfortably). Similarly, a starlit night is more than 10000 times less bright than what it is at noon on a sunny day, but you can still see pretty well in both circumstances.

“…although it’s not yet clear exactly why or how our [human] brains use this information.”

I think “when” should enter into it… which could provide this answer: Never. No important use for humans.

Perhaps this subconscious ability is just a relic of abilities inherent in the early, migrating mammals we evolved from. Maybe.

… aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

Please.

Make it stop.

Quick, someone throw the little book of calm in my mouth and choke me with it before I start telling you about how complicated life already is without such… extreme electrosensitivity.

I wonder if a device with changing magnetic field could be used to achieve psychedelic experiences during sleep or deep meditation…
Another interesting use would be enhancing VR experience.
