Look at the refrigerator handle. When these refrigerators were discarded and went to the dump children were asphyxiated playing hide and seek in them. The door cannot be opened from the inside. That’s why this type of lock is no longer available on home refrigerators. The design was cool though.

It is, indeed, a lovely handle. I guess they didn’t have access to the magnets we have now.
I’d speculate that it came about because ‘frige’ would be pronounced with a long ‘i’ so someone figured a ‘d’ would help with that.
Cheaper by the Dozen was one of my favorite books in grade school, and Mrs. Gilbreth made me want to be an engineer too – but unfortunately both inept guidance counselors and a total lack of support at home led to early marriage instead. Still together and happy after 51 years of marriage, but can’t help wondering “what if…”
