OMG! It’s a flaming horses PATOOT!
“Midnight, and the kitties are screaming…”
Uncanny valley.
You know, I’ve always hated the costumes in the play. Just felt… overly loud and aggressive, if that makes sense. “Look at these costumes! SUCH ART, MUCH THEATAH, SO BRRRROADWAY!” But the movie CGI is making me appreciate how well the theater costumes help enhance characterization.
Still, a lot of scenes from the trailer are legit gorgeous.
I’d see a doctor about the windy knob as well.
Nailed it!
Here is how they should have approached this: Lackadaisy Cats. It cries out for animation, and while we have some good examples of animation on this thread, the quality of artwork on this site takes my breath away.
For women in Hollywood, that age has typically qualified as old and decrepit.
ETA: To be clear, I’m not saying that’s a good thing. I’m just pointing out this is pretty typical casting for Hollywood. Pretty, young female character…cast an early 20s actress. Older female character…any actress over 30 is old and will do.
There’s a lot of media about Cats, unsurprisingly so given the backers.
I think they all seem to do a remarkable job of being feline. It’s weird, but what does anyone expect? It’s a movie about cats.
Yay for creativity and challenging our imaginations!
Oh, and getting old - fuck that, stop worrying. Enjoy every day as much as possible. There’s a huge, fast, powerful motorbike waiting for you in the Big Sky Place, so you’ve got that to look forward to!
If Sidney Poitier isn’t directing, what’s the point?
I don’t think it is the uncanny valley, just strange CGI character design. Reminds me of this:
Honestly, none of this stuff bothers me. I really don’t get it why people get bothered by the sonic design or by these cats, it’s really just a different type of suspension of disbelief that is necessary. It’s not like they are trying to look human (which is where the uncanny valley actually comes in).
Right? I mean Cats the musical was about overly-lithe, weirdly-sexual, leotarded dancing cats. The movie doesn’t seem to be doing anything different except crossing the uncanny valley with digital faces.
It’s like the original Star Wars movies. People will talk about how amazing they are, but if you go back and watch them without rose-colored glasses on, you’ll see they’re a little silly, have a lot of bad one liners, and the protagonists fall ass backwards into solutions, and don’t succeed with (too much) merit on their own. That’s not a bad thing really, but it’s not what people remember about them.
edit: horrible word salad It’s not too much better, but a little.
And the Jew squats on the window sill
How is this not hate speech? Why would BB re-publish it?
I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic or oversensitive.
In no possible way is it “hate speech” for a 100-year-old poem to use the word “Jew” to identify a Jew. That isn’t an insult or a slur.
It’s rather odd that a group of people. Like SF fans. Who have always been shown in books about blending theater with computer graphics and CGI costumes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Diamond_Age comes to mind and “Child of Fortune” By Norman Spinrod) And loved the idea.
It’s odd that when we reach that level of technology to do something like “Cats” with CGI mapped over the characters to give them virtual costumes and enhancements. Everyone gives it crap…even tho the look actually works for the source material.
And it’s still early to complain about the CGI. This is months out from the final release and CGI tweaking hasn’t been finalized (light reflections, body movements under the ‘skin’, hair and wind, etc ). They probably need to add lots of little bits to the CGI to fine tune the product. But the studio wants a summer trailer…so we get a summer ‘coming this Christmas’ trailer.
am i the only person who’s gonna admit they’ve never seen cats?
it’s like the producers right, but with cats?
ok so aside from a trip to ny where i saw the producers i haven’t really seen any broadway shows, so to me everything is “like the producers” in that it was once performed in ny
It’s basically a series of vignettes about different cats, each with their own song: an old cat, a fat cat, a magical cat, a rock-and-roll cat, etc. Certain cats appear throughout and provide some semblance of plot. It’s basically an excuse to watch extremely-talented dancers cavort in cat bodysuits, sing largely-forgettable songs, and then there’s “Memory”.
So its all an excuse to get people in seats and then collect whatever falls within the cushions
Cats was nice and all but it was no Amazing Alexander…
I am surprised nobody has posted this yet.
Also stupid NBC link wont one box/embed right.
