If you read Boing Boing, the NSA considers you a target for deep surveillance

Not a US citizen - check
Owns a ukulele (several) - check
Likes bananas - check
Can make explosives (if you have a science degree and can’t you’re a disgrace) - check
Have looked up and used Tor - check

I’m screwed.

Nope. If you read BoingBoing it is likely that you worship the president and love the government (and a secretly hoping Obama will pay off your grad school debt). You are a govt loving nerd.

Nah, like all conservatives I live in the woods and I am entirely self-sufficient. I’m running my tablet off a generator fueled by Ted Nugent’s untainted, drug-free dung he shits on the ground every time I threaten to draft him into the military.

If you are Tea Party on the other hand…

In that case a bunch of black, Obama loving, NSA agents know about your every purchase of prune juice, arthritis ointment and Fox News beer cozies.

It doesn’t have to be so cloak-and-dagger, and I expect it usually isn’t. The pressures on politicians are enormous. I once had a roommate who was working as the campaign manager for a left Green candidate. Throughout the campaign, she was under significant pressure to change her positions on almost every issue; in particular, the city newspaper made it clear that if she didn’t reverse her position on reducing the police budget and endorse hiring more police, just as every other candidate did, they would not cover her campaign at all, and most voters would never know she was running until election day. Eventually, she agreed to this, which meant there was no longer anything to distinguish her from other candidates. Also, mid-way through the campaign, there were increasingly tense negotiations between candidates and incumbents, regarding who would bloc with who, which made it clear that in the best-case outcome, absolutely nothing in our candidate’s original platform would ever even see public debate.

She lost, but it had long since become a moot point.

Kshama Sawant’s success in Seattle shows that it is possible for someone to get elected with a genuinely progressive agenda, under ideal circumstances – but even then, for all Sawant’s uncompromising commitment, she ended up agreeing to serious compromises to her proposal for a $15 minimum wage.

I read the posts here and from what I can tell it seems like there are a lot of Boingers out there afraid that the NSA knows what kind of porn they are into.

( posted via TOR, fuckem )

I can only hope that the NSA takes appreciative note of how often I’ve been called a fascist bootlicking toady to the oligarchy here, and FEMA-camps me last.

I regard it as a badge of honor to have my packets retained. Kind of a “Possibly Not A Sheep” ribbon.

Also, NSA guys - that chaturbate thing a couple of nights ago - seriously, worth retrieving.

By God, sir. I’ll drink to that.

Dear NSA,

As you well know I was observing a website that specializes in images of chubby Asian cheerleaders. If it is at all possible can you please forward me said images… I lost the URL.

Yours Truly,
“Slappy”

I think this is a bit of a fallacy, at least partially (I’m sure they use this data in a bunch of ways).

But they don’t need to sift through all the data for it to be useful. It’s just that once you come to their attention for any reason, they have your entire online activity for the last forever handy. For most of us, it means nothing. But should you fall under the gaze of the NSA, well, so long, mother fucker.

It’s a slight shock to see that the film The Candidate is over forty years old: it’s still well worth watching, and I doubt that it’s dated very much.

A lovely story I hadn’t heard from the writer’s Wiki page:

if you use Tails then the Tor-rerists win

Could someone please explain for the non-code-literate types on here? (Sheesh, I’ve outed myself, haven’t I?)

I took it as a exame-meme of, “The kitten has left the basket!! I repeat the kitten has left the basket!!”

Basically nonsensical phrases used to alert or indicate more info. Which are pretty funny
