Freud was really good at arching that one eyebrow, right? He should have auditioned for Spock.
Meh. I was more impressed with the skilful colourisation of 600 year old religious sculptures a post later.
It is much better than that time when they colorized old movies to arouse the interest of the young audience.
Which totally worked!
Freud looks badass!
The Little Rascals piece was amazing!
Frieda Kahlo looked super cute on that photo.
Can’t wait for giant bows like that to make a comeback.
Actually, technically, I can wait, but.
I love seeing these colorized photos. They bring the person closer to me, their lives are more grand, more intimate regardless that they were gone long before I began life. Wouldn’t it be great to have an app, a device to scan old black and white photos into color?
How is the bottom portion of this restored? Are all the details actually being recovered, or is he filling in his best guess?
Some of the restoration becomes easier when you put the photo into a photo manipulation program and play with the hue, saturation, and brightness a bit. Details that might be hidden by an old spill or fading inks can become clear enough to use as guides for the artist to recreate. And then sometimes it’s best educated guess.
I saw a short documentary about modern colorization of old black and white photos a while ago. The artist that they were covering in the documentary went through great lengths to research what the colors would be like in the cloth of the time frame for each photo, as well as fashions in make up, and a whole host of other clues to the best way to colorize appropriately.
In this photo, with the damaged original, you can see that he just fades to black at the edges. That may make it easier to fudge that area where the image is too damaged to get good detail.
More on colorized photos and restoration professionals:
They look very pretty, but not realistic.
Swiping that for use, the next inevitable time that the “morality of punching Nazis” comes up.
I commend the colorization artist’s restraint from adding in Frida’s uni-brow to be.
That one is definitely a keeper.
Saw Unger’s instagram pics. Some really good stuff there, but the one with the Inupiat family? Every photo I’ve ever seen of Inupiat’s showed them as being quite dark-skinned!
Glad to hear: surprised you haven’t ever seen it!
