I found a set of hand written pages from The Chicago MotorClub which eventually became AAA. The pages were directions for driving from central Illinois to California in the mid 1920s. They included instructions like:
Follow the dirt road and turn left at the red barn.
Cross the creek at the ford and turn right at the second road you come to.

The instructions were only good during the summer due to changing road conditions. There were warnings to get a new set of instructions if you changed travel dates. Apparently there were few to no road signs in some areas.
