I had the BIGGEST crush on Cathy Baker when I was a little kid.
I watched it all the time, but mostly for the animation, and um, didn’t notice the girls. This likely says something about me.
In all seriousness, we watched it pretty often when I was a kid, and visited “hillbilly” tourist attractions in Kentucky and Tennessee every year or so. My dad grew up on a farm, so he’s got a sense of humor about corn-pone jokes.
Or a shift from one dimension to the other?
Linda Johnson was crushable too. I had no idea she was B. Jenner’s wife once.

Never got into Hee-Haw when I was young (Laugh-In was more to my liking), but I’ve always respected it for its musical bona-fides and for being able to go against the grain for so long.
The burning of the Bronx had its roots in a culture that believed anything was legitimate in the pursuit of profit, even the suffering of children. When the banks cut off New York, the executives were fully aware of the suffering it would cause. Ford had to know what would happen when he told New York to go eff itself. Seven census tracts lost more than 97 percent of their buildings to fire and abandonment. People alleged it was arson, but the truth is that the fire stations were shut down, following the advice of the Rand Corp, and nobody could put out small fires before they became big fires. The violence and brutality the crash of New York lead to were a direct expression of the violence and brutality of the bankers sent in to take over the government. This is a great example of the worst of American culture.
There was an uprising at Attica because the prison system in this country was invented as it is to imprison black men. In Attica, black men were kept as slaves, forced into unpaid labor and literally starved. Our prison system is a direct outgrowth of slavery, and that was never more apparent than at Attica. More black men are behind bars today than were enslaved in 1850. A black child today is less likely to be raised by both parents than a black child born into slavery in the 19th century. The prison system is part of what keeps black America a colony within a country. This is very much the worst of American culture.
The Boston busing riots were entirely unnecessary. They were caused by a school situation in Boston that was cruel and vindictive. Black students were ripped off and shortchanged year after year, overcrowded, sitting in hallways with no books, while the students in majority white schools got permanent teachers and new materials. Forced integration was the result of vast differentials in funding, school resources, and teacher quality that were set up that way on purpose. When the house of cards came down, parents reacted with a truly disgusting level of violence. And lame jokes in a cornfield are the worst in American culture? I don’t think so.

The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show.
The Harlem Globetrotters Popcorn Machine.
Hell, even Donny and Marie and Sonny and Cher.
I loved all these kiddie variety shows in the seventies. Have I mentioned today how much I (sincerely, unironically) love the seventies?
Bingo.
I’m sure that Charlie Pride must have been on there more than once…
Edit: almost forgot
Hey now…
I’ve heard that joke, but with an owl (hurts me to think about it) instead of a carp.
That’s what are in the center of the picture?
Say whaaaa???
It was campy, more puns than the surgeon general says is healthy in a day, and certainly relied heavily on the rural hick stereotypes, but I remember it being fun. And some dang decent music. While music is subjective on ones taste, some fine strummers, pluckers, and singers on there.
I grew up in Missouri. Hee Haw was considered a documentary. My mother’s uncle could have been Junior Sample’s twin.
You just won the “Hee Haw” cred of the thread.
