What you call “policing language,” some people call “simple human decency.” Like, if somebody doesn’t like being called a widget, then don’t call them a widget. And if you’re not sure, ask them what they want to be called. Sometimes this is called the oppressive tyranny of political correctness. I’m not sure why.
