I’d argue that point. There are still a lot of people who practice iaido, and as a part of that tameshigiri (cutting practice).

Yeah, nobody other than random floridian meth heads are actually fighting with them nowadays, but there are still some who use live blades for martial arts practice.

FYI, if anyone is going to delve into bladesmithing, there’s a huge community that can save you a lot of pain and reduce your learning curve.

Also, there are a lot of suppliers out there and many of the “spring steels” are relatively cheap.

I could tell you a really sad story about a large camp knife made from a truck spring that had a teeny pre-existing stress fracture that was only apparent after quenching… so much lost time and effort. lesson? Buy clean bars of steel from a mill or supplier.

If you cut it using a plasma or CO2 CNC plotter instead of milling machine, it is ridiculously cheap, like no more that 10 cents per blade.
