I wouldn’t be surprised if the story about an Audio-based detection method was a cover for the actual method used, so as not to divulge just how technically advanced the espionage actually was. Rather like the story about pilots eating carrots to improve their eyesight being a cover for the development of Radar.

I was thinking of that, but once the US divulges they know it was done, the KGB knows they know the method. But not revealing the exact method, they are only keeping the general public in the dark, not the KGB.
