Huh… I always assumed “Dhal” was a name from the south Asian sub-continent.

“Dahl” -> Norwegian for “valley” (compare to German “thal” or English “dale”)
“Dal” -> Sanskrit for the verb “to split”. Used today to describe various Indian split-bean dishes.

Yeah, I didn’t say I thought his last name was “Dal”… I said I thought “Dhal” was South Asian.

It was a thing in Australia for a while because our wool export market collapsed. We were over producing and needed somewhere to put all the wool.
