‘Marriage’ has meaning under international law, especially in regards to immigration. ‘Civil partnership’ does not. This may become an issue should two partnered people from there, who have different passports, try to move abroad together.

Well, until veery recently marriage has meaning (in a bad way) under state law as well. Gay married in one state, die as a member of another state… In the same country? Giant raspberry to you and your family.
I am not denying there are still difficulties, but the closer marriage comes to a civil contract the happier I am.
