I thought that kids in abstinence only programs were more likely to have unprotected, non-vaginal sex, to preserve their “virginity,” as highlighted in this educational video by Garfunkel And Oates (NSFW language):
that’s a fun one. I can spin that several directions.
Which shows the power of both the pro-life and pro-choice arguments, and why it’s important recognize that “Pro-life” is quite a different thing from the anti-woman coercion that masquerades as “Pro-Life”, such as the TRAP laws.
My recollection -which is hazy on this point so I could easily be wrong – was that some studies showed an increase in non-vaginal sex (especially heterosexual anal sex), and these got a fair bit of press, but the finding was not consistent enough across studies to be considered well-supported.
But the data supporting Comprehensive Sex ed as leading to better health outcomes for Teens than any other studied alternative (eg Abstinence only, “traditional” communications within the family of faith community, etc ) is solidly widely supported.
I tried to binge season 1, but I just couldn’t…any more than three episodes in a row makes me start to sympathise with people who really hate America…
disclaimer - love John Oliver, love LWT, quite like Americans, really wish you guys gave him less subject matter for his show…
You have to keep in mind that the USA is a country of extremes. The best bits are awesome, the worst bits are diabolical.
And you’re right, of course. I was thinking about that the other day and wondering how to graph it:
That is hilarious, and judging from my couple of visits, fairly accurate.
Wonderfully well put! Bravo!!!
- Being pro-birth is utterly irresponsible without being truly pro-life.
The note I think of it, the more it seems that being honestly pro-life necessarily entails being truly pro-choice.
(how can we say that we respect life without granting it from freedom?)
Sure, but those are just facts.
It doesn’t feel right.
After all Jesus loves guns and billionaires, not poor women who’ve had sex! Mary Magdalen was an arms manufacturer, no?
Oh, wait, I know what you mean…
Early sexual behavior is a difficult set of questions to investigate. The non-traditional-sex behaviors might show up in aggregated data about risk factors associated with unprotected sex, abstinence and/or harms like incest, rape, HIV transmission.
Another and in some ways more relevant way to examine the questions is the research on reproductive coercion.
I just really want a simple answer to this question…
At what point did the life of someone who doesn’t exist yet become more important than the life of the person who is actually here walking, talking, and in every measurable sense a actual human being?
Maybe it would be a good idea to treat the people that are here better before we worry about the ones who haven’t arrived yet.
The HPV vaccination for girls is because HPV is the cause of almost all cervical cancer. I’m not defending it in any way, I have absolutely no idea about the relevant relative risks. But that’s why it’s for people with cervices and not for people without them.
I saw a piece about a libertarian who as trying to bring back prohibition. The word just means anything and everything.
There is a flaw in your question. You are assuming that a woman is a human being. The people who advocate these laws don’t always share that assumption.
No. There is no flaw in MY question at all. Because I am starting with the knowledge that anyone walking and talking on this planet IS a human being. Trump is a human being even if I think he is a pile of excrement. Cruz is a human being, regardless of the fact that I feel he is a waste of good oxygen. Carson is a human being, despite me feeling he has intelligence comparable to a slug.
I am not flawed here.
Forgot about this gem:
"Hey, how about we treat every young man who wants to buy a gun like every woman who wants to get an abortion -- Mandatory 48-hour waiting period, parental permission, a note from his doctor proving he understands what he's about to do, a video he has to watch about the effects of gun violence, an ultrasound wand up the ass (just because). Let's close down all but one gun shop in every state and make him travel hundreds of miles, take time off work, and stay overnight in a strange town to get a gun. Make him walk through a gauntlet of people holding photos of loved ones who were shot to death, people who call him a murderer and beg him not to buy a gun. It makes more sense to do this with young men and guns than with women and health care, right? I mean, no woman getting an abortion has killed a room full of people in seconds, right?" 11 December 2015 • Free Venice Beachhead Chee-Wah-Wah Notes from the Birds
Watched this tonight - beautiful peace of work. Don’t think I could have asked the question at the end as calmly as he did.
Quite scary to see people who seem to make a lifestyle out of hatred and nastiness, and still think of themselves as good people. I know that Christians are meant to recognise themselves as sinners, but how does being a “Good Christian” (Tm ) fit with actively looking for ways to be nasty to people?
I always learn something new by watching John Oliver, even when I think I already know how bad it is. Legislating that doctors must convey inaccurate medical advice to their patients. I assume this comes from the party that says the government should stay out of people’s lives and choices.
Ah, I see where you went wrong. When Republicans bloviate over ‘small government’, they’re referring only to regulations corporations must operate under. Tiny goverment for corporations, the biggest goverment money can buy for micromanaging meatsacks.
