He meant “spies,” I assume
I would characterize Assange as a useful idiot that suited the needs of the Russian government to sow chaos in our political system. For my friends on the other side of the aisle, the Russians don’t give a shit what party you are or support, they want to disrupt our democracy. Not to defend Assange because there’s plenty of questions about certain aspects of his behavior but, his political philosophy seemed to feed into his naïveté to provide a means to an end for a country that is seeking revenge on the part of not only the US collapsing the Soviet Union but, then not rebuilding what was destroyed.
From this Guardian article
In retrospect, Assange’s fate was sealed in 2017 when Moreno narrowly won Ecuador’s presidential election. Moreno’s leftist predecessor, Rafael Correa, had given Assange unconditional support and had offered him asylum.
Moreno was the candidate for Correa’s Alianza Pais party, but soon distanced himself from his predecessor – apparently viewing Assange as a hangover from the Correa years and an impediment to better relations with the United States.
Much like more than one break up I have witnessed, the non-asshole of the two keeps the pet.
And largely, they have succeeded.
It doesn’t help that it was already a sugar-coated fallacy built on a proverbial house of cards to begin with …
I see Assange as sort of a modern day Emma Goldman. Instead of bombs, he used leaking of information to target institutions and people who conflicted with his view of right and wrong.
At first I thought you were talking about Watergate. Then the answer would be yes.
What “democracy” are you talking about?
That gif is an extremely succinct way of summing up my thoughts expressed earlier in this thread. Thanks for posting it.
I didn’t realize Emma Goldman was a rapist
Yup.
Charlie Chaplin was a slimeball who preyed on teenage girls. But that isn’t why Hitler wanted him dead.
Except, you know, the whole feminism and anti-racism aspect… kind of utterly fails at that…
In fact, can we not compare him to someone who I actually do hold in high regard. She was pretty principled and committed… I don’t believe he is.
Both Daniel Ellsberg and Tulsi Gabbard have come out with strong statements condemning the arrest.
Just more people to throw under the bus at this point.
In an interview today, Ellsberg sounded convinced that this is just the start of a larger war on the media by Twittledum, leading to something truely scary - a general loss of freedom for everybody since the 1st Admendment is a prime casulty of today’s news.
But it’s probably worth it to get Assange.
Assuming he gets extradited to the US, which is far from certain, I’m betting on L) Nothing dramatic or deadly, just some years in a federal prison. Which is probably the worst possible thing to happen to an attention-starved narcissist like Assange, who likes to pretend that he’s a super-important free speech hero.
Are you suggesting the Skripals are being kept incommunicado by the British government to silence them?
Not really. By being a narcissistic asshole and using Wikileaks for blatantly partisan purposes, Assange has caused a lot of damage to the credibility and moral justifications of whistleblowers.
No, because said emails did not show the DNC rigging the primaries, despite how they were spun.
I think it were the miffed Bernie supporters, who decided that if they can’t have their candidate, they will have no president at all. And that’s what they got…
Ohh, a thread-jacking! Can I play?
The “Bernie supporters” might have taken their cue from the actions of miffed Hillary primary voters circa 2008. Just not as many as in 2008.
Simply stated, a greater percentage of voters went from voting for Hillary in the primary to voting for McCain in the general in 2008 than went from Sanders in the primary to Trump in 2016.
Kinda depressing at how many Hillary voters turned out to hate Obama.
