…
No one is surprised that someone wealthy and famous for a long time doesn’t like living like an average Joe.
Actually, what it sounds like is that he was surprised. In the VF article they say it had been a long-standing fantasy of his to be able to be a little more anonymous. Then when he tried it, he was taken aback at how rude people are to other “ordinary” folks.
I mean, yeah he concludes that he enjoys the privilege being famous gets him but at least he’s apparently acknowledging it? I guess? Dunno.
And now I have Shatner’s cover of “Common People” in my head.
Perhaps he’s having flashbacks?
Six Degrees of Separation from Reality for Kevin Bacon - can’t fault him, he’s human & just used to his privilege now. FWIW, i think the overarching question is why he, a celebrity, should somehow be treated better than the rest of when what he represents is a modern day version of the medieval court jester, there for our distraction & entertainment …? (Dance, monkey, dance!!)
There’s a Ben Folds song for that.
And they gave me some food
And they didn’t charge me
And they gave me some coffee
But they didn’t charge me
And when I was broke I needed it more
But now that I’m rich, they give me coffee
It is the definitive cover of the song, imho.
Just this – right off the bat – privilege: “I went to a special effects makeup artist, had consultations, and asked him to make me a prosthetic disguise."
Hypothetical discussion:
Band: “You want us to what?”
Shatner: “Play to my sprechgesang.”
Band: “Sprechgesang? Meaning…”
Shatner: “I will speak the lyrics.”
Band: “Sounds like narration.”
Shatner: “Narration? No! That’s Nimoy’s thing. This is sprechgesang!”
Band: “Whatever.”
The pushing past part is legitimately annoying, but the other parts he complained about…
aren’t even rude.
I actually like it better than the original.
I didn’t know someone had made a video of that with clips from the cartoon. I also like the one with clips from ToS:
Well, at least he’s honest about it. The ones that bug me are the ones who soak in the adulation while claiming they never wanted to be famous. (Looking at you, Billie Eilish and Justin Bieber).
There’s plenty of celebs who try to be as anonymous as possible. All too many try to play that middle ground of complaining about their fame while at the same time doing things they know will get them more attention.
Conspicuously missing from the “Previously” posts:
coincidentally, i was singing it earlier this morning before i even ran across this story, and now i will for sure have it stuck there for the next several hours.
