He may not mean that being gay is fashionable, but that certain pretty obviously gay (but presumably celibate) priests invest quite a bit of effort in fashionable vestments as it were.

Maybe we’ve all just been misinterpreting this and his reference to “fashionable homosexuals” was just his way of saying he’s a Queer Eye fan.
It’s like he’s regretting having missed the opportunity to become a drag queen. A bit of make-up and he could do a little old lady act.
