I’m sure it’s been mentioned here before but apparently Lenin spoke English with an Irish accent:

ETA Beshoff’s chip shop(s) are of course hugely famous here so the above is well known. Our local chip shop is 50M away and they do gluten free, they and the restaurant at the mosque are the shops that know us all by name!

There certainly seem to be enough buried clues (literally) backing up the theory.

And why not? It’s the sort of thing Vikings did, no matter their gender.

Yeah, their thing was sea navigation. Old fashioned notions that they couldn’t navigate (or other premodern cultures) out of sight of land were utterly dumb in the first place (that’s not how navigation works if you don’t want a lee shore eating you alive) and utterly debunked by the accumulation of evidence.

There was a moment in that article, where they were quoting the (same year, 2014) WaPo piece on the subject, which began:

The word has surprisingly black roots

And no, they did not mean African, they were using the term to mean negative/bad.

2014 isn’t that long ago. The Smithsonian should have known to not leave the quote as-is without some sort of editorial comment.
