At the risk of going all-out smartass here - I am… surprised… that Williams only accidentally stumbled across this in 2017.
I also note that he left out the quite substantial Canadian contribution. (Maybe this is in his book; it’s not in the article or the video.)
From what I’ve read over the years on the subject my take is that the US would have gotten there eventually without the UK, but substantially later. Quite possibly too late to use any bombs in the war. Also quite possibly going exclusively with gunbarrel-type uranium bombs for a while. They’d still would have needed to source a lot of the uranium from Canada, though.
The other thing is how the 1946 Atomic Energy Act completely nuked the 1943 Quebec Agreement.
