I raised an eyebrow at first, but now it makes sense since bowling was an activity that he and his father often shared. His dad would probably be happy to know that he was still attending league nights with his son rather than being stored in an urn on a shelf.
Great Canadian movie “Men With Brooms” has a similar concept in a curling rock.
