Man flew to China to meet online girlfriend, but didn't

After reading the BBC article (which btw indicates that the girl was real and she wants to keep the relationship going, which doesn’t come across at all in this article), I have only one question: why do they get a doge emoji in China?

I vote for David Ury

(who is the same person as Ken Tanaka, btw)

That was awesome!

Hearing the “David Ury speaking in Japanese” was like hearing someone speaking English with marbles in their mouth. I really hope I don’t sound like that when I am speaking Japanese :frowning:

I like that some comments, in the article, were positive and in support of a person chasing love.

This one was pretty great, too:

Come to think of it, they’d better get a move on if they might marry in China, considering the impending legislation against marrying foreigners.

There was a thing in the Science Magazine podcast a while back (can’t immediately find a link) where researchers VPNed into China and made various inflammatory posts to see what got censored.

It turned out that the censors don’t really mind if you talk shit about China, the government, or specific politicians. You get censored if you call for action. That includes positive as well as negative action–trying to organize a parade honoring the mayor gets quashed as hard as organizing a protest against the mayor.

If they didn’t want to be taken advantage of, why were they so lonely in the first place?

Hmmm… met a woman here recently who, within a mere hour or two of meeting me, seemed to be planning our life together. I thought she was a tad (or two or three) obsessive, maybe she was just trying to beat a deadline.

I found the same in Austin back in 2007.
Despite intending to leave town indefinitely, I was receiving phone calls from her begging me to stay. Even as I was heading out on I-35.

Surprising someone internationally isn’t just “loneliness”, it sounds a bit threatening outside of the romcoms.

Yeah, I can’t poke fun at this guy. I didn’t fly to China from the Netherlands or anything, but I did drive from L.A. to Salt Lake City only to find she had changed her mind sometime after I’d left my house.

What an emotional turnaround. I couldn’t say which drive took longer, for utterly different reasons.

I did the 8 hour drive to (planned before she went off to college) visit an ex, ended up hanging out awkwardly with her and her new boyfriend, which stung as she had somehow forgotten to mention him.

Thankfully, my immature chewing out was forgotten over the years, she moved to my city and I hang out with her and her husband, still talk to her old boyfriend as well.

On the receiving end, I met a girl that seemed okay a few hours away which decided to visit me, but stated with wide-open eyes when she got to my town that she’d spend the entire drive masturbating… I didn’t receive the hard-sell very well and spent the time of the hang-out (not a “date”) getting a friend to deflect advances. I can only imagine how many women receive similar expectations and “lonely” surprises.

Yeesh. Yeah, I’ll bet waaaay too many of 'em have such stories. But as a fairly average-at-best-looking heterosexual male… well, you just don’t hear that kind of thing. I wonder how I would have received it.

Huh? Why did this news story writer leave out approximately 75% of the story? Have a look at: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11685821 for the actual news report. I just lost this site’s credibility. At least try to cover a story correctly, beschizza. Lol.

You what? Okay. Don’t panic. Let’s try to work this out.

Do you remember where you were when you last had it? It can’t be far away if you just lost it. Try retracing your steps. We need to find it and put it back in place to prevent people from becoming disappointed™.

It is actually a government sanctioned cyber attack against Western Artificial Intelligence, “If everything in China is fake… then this message is fake … Paradox detected! 01000001 01100001 01100001 01100001 01100111 01101000 00100001 00100000 01001101 01111001 00100000 01100011 01101111 01101101 01110000 01110101 01110100 01100101 01110010 00100000 01100010 01110010 01100001 01101001 01101110 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01101101 01100101 01101100 01110100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100001…”
