Man gets $300 ticket for using phone while driving, but argues the phone was actually a McDonald's hash brown

Important parenting skill!

Yep, it sure is. And fashion is gonna be followed.

We still haven’t gotten to the important question. How good is the reception when you use a hash brown? Is it better than taking a selfie with a potato?

It’s sad how long I’ve been waiting for a chance to use that…

I suspect you’ll wait even longer to use cur-tailed.

And don’t get me started on the built in Nav that won’t let me scroll the map once you start moving, while still allowing you to go into all kinds of menus that require reading (and of course the usual touchscreen control stuff). Been glancing at maps while driving for 30 years and suddenly mommy won’t let me. Fuck those bastards. Would have told the dealer the screw the nav and knock $500 bucks off instead of insisting they throw it in. Renders it almost useless.

Which is why it’s a bad idea to have a law. The Law is very good at black and white, pretty terrible at everything else. Driving laws should be about one’s driving, not everything else one might be doing. Driving recklessly is what harms other drivers, exactly what is causing the recklessness is not important. I mean, the absurdity almost breaks my brain- you can get a ticket for driving perfectly. Just because you glanced at a map or read a txt when it is safe to do so (because yes, there are times when it’s perfectly as safe as changing the channel on the radio or eating a french fry).

Honestly, the law has made it less safe. I’ve never felt more dangerous than while fiddling with all the hands-free tech, which I’ve never gotten to work without far more button pushes and glancing and fiddling than just making the damn phone call on the phone like normal. And people holding their phone up on the steering wheel would be safer than having it where they look down at their laps, which is what they do now. You’re right, it’s not black and white, and it will never be perfect; so in the meanwhile, I’d rather have one imperfection that’s better than a slightly worse imperfection backed by cops.

It’s also simply a failure. Seriously, I’m sure I’m not the only one who occasionally looks around and sees that enormous numbers of people are breaking this law. It’s obvious that people are free to follow it or ignore it at their leisure. Meanwhile it gives cops more excuses to fuck with people and get things wrong in general.
