Is this lazy editing and perhaps a link copied by mistake from the source or the greatest non-sequiter to hit Boing Boing this year?
Right. It was an interstitial headline that made it over in my copy-paste. Thank you; fixed!
Good on this guy. His karma level just blew through the roof.
There are worse ways to start a day.
Not to diminish his character, but he didn’t really have a choice. The Treasure Act of 1996 requires that he report the find, and offer it to a museum for a price determined by an independent third party.
Came here for a Detectorists reference (actually to post one).
Delighted.
Got here first! Happy there are other fans. One of the best shows ever.
Luckily for archaeologists, ancient Scotsmen were not the austere monastic type. Going for simple funerals/graves.But they apparently loved showering grave sites with assorted knicknacks and doodads to be found centuries later.

Now I have to watch the whole series again…
This strikes me as rather a good system. The landowners have an incentive to encourage people looking for this stuff, finders have an incentive to report it in its in-tact, in situ location, and the public/academia gets a chance to learn from it.
From the responses to other topics where the show was mentioned, there’s quite a community of fans here on the BBS.
That’s why he’s a stand up guy. Could have just dug it up and stuck it in his pockets.
Another version of how this was reported.
That would have been illegal and recently some others who did that here were jailed.
This show is now always the first thing that comes to mind when anything comes up in the news about metal detectors.
