Thank the gods!
FIFY!
Workers of the world untie unite!
That covers 32 in-house vfx workers. The thousands of third-party studio workers are not included. Btw, that’s not the first vfx union. ILM used to be covered by IATSE. Until they voted to leave the union.
Is this common? Feels like conditions have to be incredibly bad for that to happen.
It’s only a handful of people.
Yeah, but iirc so are the Starbuck stores and they haven’t been unanimous
well, about six handfuls ( for the non-polydactyl at least )
nice to see disney also is moving in the same direction:
( edit: because i can’t math )
How fitting that they took to heart the “ASSEMBLE!” battle cry.
As a software developer for the animation industry, who was laid off at the beginning of summer due to the aforementioned strikes, all I can say is “about damn time!” This needs to be every animation/VFX studio. I’ve been through enough layoffs and bankruptcies, and seen enough artists get laid-off en-masse at the end of projects, to know that something needs to change. Once the industry’s current “moment” is over, I want IATSE or whoever’s willing to fight for the workers at these studios to stand ready to unionize more shops.
