The Alamo here in Austin used to commission scores for movies to be played live. You ain’t seen Nosferatu until you’ve heard it live (also, the Alamo has a variable speed projector and can show it properly). Unfortunately, they commissioned a score for City Lights, which Chaplin specified was only to use his score. The Chaplin Estate went after them big time and they don’t do that any more.

several years ago my wife and i saw koyaanisqatsi at mcfarland auditorium on the smu campus in dallas. the score was performed live by the phiip glass ensemble. it was a lot of fun.
