Apparently The Social NetworkTM is the only one allowed to do nasty things with users’ data

Facebook has sued a Ukrainian national for allegedly harvesting and selling personal data describing 178 million of the Social NetworkTM’s users – actions it says violates the service’s terms of service.
The suit alleges that Alexander Alexandrovich Solonchenko created millions of virtual Android devices, each with a different phone number, and used them to deliver automated requests to Facebook systems using the Messenger app.

We dubbed it the Antisocial Network – and it appears we were right

Facebook on Wednesday was sued for allegedly violating federal securities laws in the first of what’s likely to be many such claims arising from internal documents revealed by former employee and whistleblower Frances Haugen.
Less than a day earlier, Facebook reportedly told its employees in an internal email to “preserve internal documents and communications since 2016,” due to its expectation of regulatory scrutiny and litigation.
The lawsuit [PDF], which also names CEO Mark Zuckerberg and CFO David Wehner as defendants, was filed in the Eastern District of New York. It contends that the company and its executives over the past five years repeatedly made false and misleading statements to investors, citing news reports that have emerged since mid-September about the apparent divergence between the company’s public communication and its internal discussions.

Facebook – sorry, “Meta” – has used the week of its much-derided rebranding exercise to quietly retire Oculus for Business.
Oculus for Business was officially launched just two years ago, but in a blog post this week, the social media empire of dubious repute announced that the business-only products were to be discontinued. Companies desperate for VR would be given the option of using the Quest 2 consumer product, in addition to a new business platform.

You may think that this is just a cheap and cynical rebranding exercise to mitigate the ongoing controversies in which Facebook is mired. But this move goes way beyond that. We’re well beyond an organization renaming itself to simply signal a change in direction or attitude. We’re beyond a company trying to shed its toxic image. This isn’t an antidote to the poison.
Mark Zuckerberg has gone off the deep end.
The name change heralds the reorganization of the Facebook empire around a single concept: the metaverse. To Zuckerberg, the term – coined by Neal Stephenson in the sci-fi novel Snow Crash – describes an internet-connected fantasy world in which everything and everyone is virtual and perfect.

It was/is also a good source for brazilian memes, because ‘meta’ is the imperative form of the verb ‘meter,’ which means to fuck.
