‘We are not people to Mark Zuckerberg, we are the product’ rages Ohio’s Attorney General in Facebook lawsuit

Facebook was sued by Ohio’s Attorney General Dave Yost on Tuesday for allegedly deceiving shareholders about the potential harm its social media platform inflicted on young users.

The complaint [PDF] was filed on behalf of the state’s largest pension fund, Ohio Public Employees Retirement System, and all other investors that acquired Facebook shares between April 29 and October 22 this year.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, CFO David Wehner, and VP of Global Affairs and Communications (and former British Deputy Prime Minister) Nick Clegg were also listed as defendants.

Mark Zuckerberg’s recently rebadged Meta and Amazon Web Services have announced they’re going to be cloud BFFs, with the emphasis on the second F.

A joint announcement styles AWS as Meta’s “Key, Long-Term Strategic Cloud Provider”. Details of just what that means have not been offered, but a few specific initiatives were revealed.

One is the plan for Meta to “use the cloud to support acquisitions of companies that are already powered by AWS”. That’s notable, because when the firm (under its former nomenclature) acquired messaging service WhatsApp in 2014, it migrated the service from AWS to its own infrastructure. The new deal appears to mean Meta won’t bother doing that again – perhaps because it’s had a rotten time managing a MySQL migration?

Facebook files challenge to UK Giphy buyout ban by complaining CMA was ‘unfair’ and ‘irrational’

Facebook has filed its legal challenge to the UK’s ban on its Giphy merger, saying officials ignored “plainly relevant information” in their November decision.

In its challenge to the merger ban, filed in the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) and publicised today, Facebook parent company Meta said the Competition and Markets Authority had made a litany of mistakes in blocking the deal which judges should overturn.
