So… can a non-tech-head like me handle using, say, Linux Mint?
In all likelihood, Microsoft has been doing this for quite a while now. Recall the NSAKEY discovery of 1999:
Good memory
And don’t forget neo-feudalism - everything olde is new again!
As well perceived as this observation of effects is, we must not let ourselves think for a moment it has anything particular to do with technology or that it’s inevitable at all. (Ref: dragonfrog, Hippocratic oath). We have also had a 30 year, accelerating, policy shift which in the simplest sense, benefits 1% (0.001%) and harms 99% (99.999%).
In parallel we have a climate change countdown. It now seems negative, uncontrollable, climate-changing feedback effects may kick in much sooner, and we have to switch from a carbon-based ponziconomy to a renewable real economy before my kid is 5. That would suggest citizens shut down their countries as a show of intentions and power, ie. “Switch. Now.”
On the one hand, total dataveillance supporting neo-feudalism and a carbon economy - on the other hand, internet privacy supporting democracy, and a revolutionised energy economy. It is an interesting play of self-sustaining elements. Either 1% have it really good at a tremendous cost to everyone, or 99.9% have it really good at their own expense.
Here’s hoping.
