Well, I know that the recording industry either ignored or tolerated some piracy in the CW era, especially in places where they did not have market access, and piracy (along with armed forces radio/VOA/Radio free Europe/etc) drove demand for western artists, which eventually did help open those markets (Yugoton imported EMI’s catalog to the eastern bloc starting in the late 60s). And some artists have always encouraged “piracy” as it shared the music (the Dead).
