That’s how telephone service worked for decades, and it had its upside. Ma Bell really acted like a utility, which includes laying unprofitable cables out in the country. They also stifled the development of the transistor.

If we’re in the same boat today, there’s pluses and minuses. But maybe the biggest plus is we’ve already dealt with Ma Bell, and now we know how it’s done. Today it would be impossible, but who knows what 2030 will look like?
