The story of the author is no less amazing. She was bitten by a mosquito at 40, acquired West Nile Virus and survived, partially paralyzed and lost the use of her drawing hand. She had to go through chronic pain to teach herself to draw again. NPR’s Terry Gross interviewed her and Emil Farris mentioned that, had she not have been bitten and gotten West Nile, this graphic novel would likely have never happened.
