I’ve used the free version of this program and it was indeed more helpful for mapping signal strength and planning router placement than any number of signal strength bars. You do feel kind of dorky taking your laptop to every nook and cranny of the house. But, you know, free.

What are the actual screenshots like and why does the thing in the artical image look so danged fake?

The version I used looks pretty much like its app store screenshot.

No idea what’s different from the paid version.

I was hoping for something slick like this Mac program where I could interactively map the house and see exactly what’s going on.

A less interactive way could utilize a pencil and paper, and e.g. a cellphone with a wifi signal strength indicator app.

Also, beware of the 3d nature of the environment. The signal can vary with height too.
