I like how maybe 20% of the time CSS renders the adverts over the key points of the article text. In the meantime, Head Pigeons.
Fine. I’ll try to have fun anyway… somehow.
Spoilsport.
Will shaving the kid bald help? After all, it’s in the hair the lice tend to hide out.
It’s the hair itself that the lice tend to attach their eggs to, which is why shaving is effective.
The problem is that these two goals are somewhat at odds with each other, especially when you’re dealing with kids whose parents might not have the resources to do their part, whether they’re unhoused, or working five jobs, or just don’t speak English well. Those kids are already the most at-risk of being stigmatized for OTHER reasons.
Totally. I should have had a “However, also…” in that second sentence. It’s a difficult thing for schools to balance. And lice is a difficult thing for families to deal with under any circumstances, let alone the ones you described.
Definitely. Our kid’s class had repeated outbreaks last year and the school struggled to achieve that balance.
Their hands were also somewhat tied by a district policy that prohibits screening the whole class for lice, which I think is intended to prevent placing a stigma on anyone, but from my perspective seems like a really dumb policy since they still have a policy of sending kids home if they’re found to have lice (and requiring the kids pass a screening to come back). So there were a couple of kids who just kept getting sent home over and over, and they weren’t actually identifying the kid(s) who were spreading it in the class.
Eventually a couple of resourceful parents persuaded the principal to override that policy and allow a team of screeners to come do a quick check on everyone. They found a couple kids who hadn’t previously been found, and the problem went away. But the whole thing had to be done quietly to avoid getting the principal in trouble. Sigh.
It’s an icky annoyance that can last quite awhile, but not a danger… so glad they dropped the no nits policy.
Let the parents know, provide guidance and goo enough.
Been through it last summer, and it was mostly a perseverance issues (which can be challenging for families under a lot of stress).
