New wind-tunnel tests find surprising gains in cycling efficiency from leg-shaving

Would it work even with hailstorm pockmarks?

But the beard it does nothing!

Absolutely, his beard did nothing - and there are probably a few good reasons for that. Here are the ones that probably don’t matter.

• He has straight hair
• His beard was dense, it already formed the shape it would wet
• His beard was cropped close, and followed a regular curve

Last reason, and this one does matter:

• Take a look (0:35 is one time you can see it) at the position he’s riding in from the front (top right image). The bottom of his face is actually positioned below his shoulder line in this riding position. His beard can’t block more air than his chest.

I’d guess that’s really why it doesn’t matter, when the type of helmet you wear does. The helmet sits above your shoulders.
