I really hope that isn’t the case. If it is then progressive organizations can expect it to be thrown their way double-fold from conservative AGs (I know, they have been a victim of it in the past). But there is a line between prosecution and persecution.
If politicians are being bribed, then that is the crime that needs to be prosecuted. If it’s about tying up money that would otherwise go to campaign donations, that strikes me as corrupt. For certain there is too much money in politics but such is the law of the land.
I’m not surprised Trump is taking a swing at such a slow-pitched softball. The only good that could come of this is either something happening AFTER Biden wins the election, or at best distracting the NRA from supporting Trump because they’re too busy having lawsuits and frozen bank accounts or whatever.
The downside risk is that the NRA’s base will get more riled up at the gun-grabbers and donate money to Trump or to some Texas-based Gun-Nut PAC which donates it to Trump or show up to vote against the Commie Librul Gun-Grabbers, and that that’ll outweigh the damage it does to the NRA who would otherwise be helping Trump.
Yeah, right. Like that’s going to be the difference between a battleground state tipping blue or red. The people who give a damn about dissolution of the NRA are voting regardless, and we know who they’re voting for. Personally, this is just as likely to rally progressives and get them out to vote.
Or maybe the plan is JUST TO DO HER DAMN JOB! As a 501C, there are laws governing the NRA and their financial responsibilities. The NRA breaks the laws, it’s her job to go after the NRA.
… yeah, I know. There’s no way it’s not political. Forgive me for stating the obvious.
Do you think there are a lot of progressives that weren’t going to vote, who now say “yeah, I think I will now…” because an AG in New York wants to try to dissolve the NRA?
How would those numbers compare to the millions of working class NRA members who don’t pay much attention to politics, rarely vote, but will be getting a fearmongering letter saying they better vote or the commie democrats will take their guns?
Maybe and who knows? I have no data to support either argument, other than anecdotal data from family members who are NRA supporters. They see voting for NRA-backed candidates as a moral imperative. I also believe (but can’t prove), that progressive support for Biden is slim, and progressives need something (anything) to motivate them to bother voting.
I get what you’re saying (and totally agree). On the other hand, Trump wasn’t exactly an unknown in 2016, but I believe I could find support for the claim that progressives collectively let us down by not holding their noses and voting for Clinton. Of course, that’s a pretty broad claim, maybe somewhat oblivious to the shenanigans of republican-led voting commissions, and unfair to many progressives (myself included) who went out of their way on behalf of trump-opposing candidates.
So what’s different this year? Three years later, the country’s in flames, and we still have progressives bitching about Biden’s bona-fides. I just want to shake these people and say “fine, but RBG isn’t going to last forever”.
I get what you are saying too. I just think the progressives you are talking about are a tiny, vocal, but tiny segment of the population. The image above is my own home state. If you look at maps of most states you’ll see the same. 600,000+ votes down the toilet because Trump gets all 8 electoral votes.
We had almost 60% turnout. 100% in the blue counties wouldn’t have made a dent. The red counties aren’t rife what what you or I would call progressives. They are packed with hunters and gun owners, though.
The sad thing is, a great many of those red counties used to be blue. They were Democrats because of social programs and the unions during the Great Depression. As that generation died, they turned red. By the Reagan era it was over.
The two choices are revising the electoral system, or making a bigger tent to enfold those red counties. If doing that causes the progressives to stay home, and we can’t change the electoral system, there’s no hope at all.
