The NYT is playing the role of the chief Trumpist propaganda organ to the Liberals. Its stories are targeted towards centre-right Liberal sensibilities, but with a Trump-useful slant. So, given that, the reaction you describe is exactly what you’d expect.

The NYT has always been a right wing paper; the vaguely leftish aspects of its public persona are just camouflage for the rest of it.
