It’s not working, I can see them very plainly in @smulder’s photo.
The one thing we do know is that it’s insufficient.

The NYPD interpretation of NY state law and MTA regulations is that it is illegal to carry a knife on the subway.

A kitchen knife, especially in its original packaging or sealed in a box, should be perfectly acceptable provided you don’t intend to use it as a weapon. But I can see an over-zealous cop confiscating it in the name of “public safety”.
