Also, so what if they find somebody carrying a knife? That’s not illegal in and of itself. So either they ̶c̶o̶n̶f̶i̶s̶c̶a̶t̶e̶ steal it and violate someone’s right to carry a knife (not to mention cost that person money and/or time to replace it) or they do nothing, in which case why are they searching bags in the first place?

The NYPD interpretation of NY state law and MTA regulations is that it is illegal to carry a knife on the subway.

A kitchen knife, especially in its original packaging or sealed in a box, should be perfectly acceptable provided you don’t intend to use it as a weapon. But I can see an over-zealous cop confiscating it in the name of “public safety”.
