Picky point: hanafuda is not just a game, but also the style of playing card used to play it, which can also be used to play other games. A hanafuda deck has 48 cards, split into 12 suits, each named for a month of the year and associated with a flower (hanafuda means “flower cards”). They can be very beautiful.

They did sorta look back (or combine the two). Nintendo Clubhouse Games for the Switch includes a good Hanafuda game (with an unlockable Mario themed deck!)
