Your move, Patagonia!
Thatās an incredible article. I read it pretty carefully but couldnāt find anything Patagonia was actually doing that they werenāt already doing. So
1% of sales to preservation. Theyāve done that forever.
Sued the Trump administration over Bearās Ears. As did many others.
They use organic cotton.
Everything else seems to be āhave a mission statement and hire people who believe in it.ā
Great marketing puff piece.
Thereās a lot about the who and the how of Patagonia that has my attention.
For starters, they are a privately-owned company, which means they donāt obsess over CrEaTiNg ShAreHolDeR vALuE and the obscene gap between lowest-paid and highest-paid people at their company.
If you havenāt, this is a good alternative-business-book read:
looking for some time to read his co-written followup:
and if you want something less business-y but so very Chouinard-y (yes I am a fan):
ā¦ keeping some pesticides off the land and out of the water and air. Conventional cotton farming is very water- and pesticide-intensive.
They recycle much of their synthetic-wear in a take-back program at all Patagonia stores. Or mail the old stuff in to them. I have taken in fleece jackets, BaggiesĀ®, (after ten years they get stiff), all to get reprocessed by Patagonia.
Even better, they have this outstanding program:
and they do still have repair services for Patagonia stuff I am unwilling to part with yet.
They try to keep water clean or cleaner than most companies.
They have reduced and are working to eliminate toxic blue dyes from their product lines:
I have much to learn from them and their ongoing, self-improving, experimental, playful, ecologically-oriented mission and action. And results.
Coming soon to a bank near you?
Happy Fourth everybody
huh, also coincidentally just learned this term yesterday watching this video (which was recently featured on Coryās blog)
