Not that I would want this to happen to a plane I’m on, but that’s not so much “plane catches fire” as “turbofan engine is experiencing technical problems”. Modern planes are designed to deal with this sort of thing.
Western NY parking lots are about to look more classy
Sure, but airlines are still flying some ancient ones.
I was just on a 737, I think, that was scary ancient. Streaks of grime everywhere, the seat pockets were nearly falling off, the plastic on the ceiling was creaking like crazy, and the latch holding up my tray table broke off.
It was a US flight, but I felt transported back in time to like, Yugoslavia Airlines.
Alex Winter really is the best. There was a great interview with him the other day on the Vergecast talking about his new documentary “The YouTube Effect” - he really understands online spaces!
I’ve been there, and it’s one of the reasons I stopped flying.
Mine was on Air Portugal (TAP). Afterwards, my friends in the travel biz told me that really means Take Another Plane.
Its an issue with surging in the fuel flow control. If there is a fault excess fuel can get dumped into the engine and the excess gets burned off in a flame. This also causes a forward surge of thrust which sloshes the fuel in the supply lines, which causes thrust to drop, which then allows another surge of fuel and you get a pretty flame again. Dramatic, but ultimately not that dangerous. Shutting down the engine and restarting it should correct it but maintenance is still required.
Its a lot like pogo-ing on liquid fueled rockets, but that is much more dangerous because of the amount of mass sloshing around
Hey, the joke about Spantax was that they always had at least one priest on board, just in case.
Very hospitable of them. This makes me wonder, though:
… I always wondered about that
Speaking of fire and air traffic…
To me this seems it could be the perfect metaphor for something, if only I could conclude conclusively for what, exactly.
Trølling done right for a change. Subtle, elegant, and for good reasons.
Starts as a mundane story about an airport, then suddenly switches to a fancy scooter catching fire. Overall not a good Segway
