The genes that unlock tortie coats on cats only happen with two X chromosomes. One controls a black coat and the other an orange coat. The combinations of black and orange can mean you have one or the other or both. (Fun fact: You can chart out the possible coat combinations based on the parent sex and coat colors). Calico happens when you have a tortie with an additional gene mutation called the piebald gene which adds white into the mix when activated. (Another fun fact: tortie fur patterns are random so even if you cloned one, the clone would have a different pattern.)
Since you can only have both colors with two X chromosomes that means having a male is super rare since it would have to be XXY. It also means this kitty is almost certainly sterile.
